The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 简介:1958年初春,新疆维吾尔自治区掀起大跃进的高潮。绿洲农业生产合作社副主任帕塔木汗,从内地学习回来。她积极响应上级关于粮食自给的号召,主张到沙园子开荒种粮。但社主任哈斯木认为绿洲社一向是以经济作物为主,粮食的来源主要靠买政府的商品粮,今后仍然要坚持这样的原则。他在投机商人木沙牙行的怂恿下,一心要搞副业赚钱。帕塔木汗并不反对发展副业,但她认为增产粮食是根本。她不顾哈斯木的反对,依靠贫下中农,组织社员去开荒,并得到沙园子农业合作社主任哈力克和社员们的热情帮助,种上了小麦。不料就在麦苗茁壮成长的时候,刮起了八级大风,飞沙淹没了麦田,也摧残了不少果树。帕塔木汗马上组织群众抢救,而哈斯木则认为麦子已无法挽救,不如放弃算了。在大家忙着抗灾的时刻,木沙牙行和地主吐然伯克却在一边幸灾乐祸,并煽动哈斯木把一部分副业队的人拉出去打短工,并且要把社里的棉、菜种籽带到自由市场高价出售。帕塔木汗及时发现了问题,劝告哈斯木不能听木沙牙行这些人的话。可是哈斯木误会帕塔木汗是为抬高自己,故意与他作难。后来,帕塔木汗在哈力克的帮助下,救活了麦苗,获得了丰收。之后,哈力克的爷爷赛义提找帕塔木汗的父亲热依木去说亲,木沙牙行从中造谣破坏。哈斯木也不问青红皂白跑到两社联合开荒的工地上,与帕塔木汗和哈力克大吵大闹,说他们在并社问题上公私不分。哈山乡长和张书记看出这不仅是哈斯木的思想问题,背后一定有坏人煽动,他指示帕塔木汗要调查研究。帕塔木汗依靠群众的力量,很快就掌握了木沙牙行和吐然伯克造谣破坏和盗窃集体财物的罪证。在事实面前,木沙牙行和吐然伯克不得不低头认罪。哈斯木在党组织的帮助下,如梦初醒,悔恨被敌人蒙骗、利用。最后,绿洲、沙园子等农业合作社合并成立了人民公社,坎儿井、渠道也修成了,清清的泉水流向新开垦的田地,千年黄沙变绿洲。
